ITS STORY
The inn was built by Sultan Bayezid II to fund his complex in Istanbul; work began in 1489 and was completed in 1491. A small kiosk mosque stands in the middle of its courtyard. Today it is one of the liveliest parts of the bazaar: silk is sold upstairs and the courtyard is a tea garden.
History
Throughout history, it has been known by such names as “Yeni Han”, “Beylik Han”, “Hân-ı Cedîd-i Âmire”, “Hân-ı Cedîd-i Evvel”, “Simkeş Han”, “Sırmakeş Han”, “Beylik Caravanserai” and “Eski Yeni Han”, and after the construction of the Pirinç Han, it began to be known as Eski Yeni (Old New) Han.
Architecture
The han consists of rooms above and below arranged around a courtyard, in accordance with the classical Ottoman han plan, and a stable-storage section adjacent to the east façade. The single-storey stable building is adjacent to the han building to the east.
