ITS STORY
The tomb belongs to Orhan Gazi, second sultan of the Ottoman state and conqueror of Bursa; it also holds the sarcophagi of his wife Nilüfer Hatun and other family members. The old building was entirely destroyed in the 1855 earthquake. The present single-domed tomb was rebuilt by Sultan Abdülaziz.
History
The tomb belongs to Orhan Gazi, the second sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the conqueror of Bursa. It is known that Orhan Bey, fulfilling the will of his father Osman Gazi, buried him in one of the old monastery buildings within the city walls, which was later known as the “Gümüşlü Kümbet”.
Architecture
The tomb building, which has a square plan and is covered with a single dome, measures 16.80 × 16.80 m. The wall thickness is 1.30 meters. The building, which is entered through a marble-framed and segmented arched door, is centered on a small dome supported by four columns, as in the tombs of Murad I Hudâvendigâr and Murad II in Bursa.
